Tricky Words

1. Figure out two-syllable words built from basic chunks.

2. Read compound words (something, everybody).

3. Read words with these endings (-ed, -er, -ing, -es, -y, -le, -est).

4. Use double consonant rule (hoping/hopping).

5. Stop and try again if something doesn't look right, sound right, or make sense, and try again.

  • Read to friends and family
  • Ask as you read: Does that make sense? Does that sound like a word I know?

6. Use what I know to figure out what I don't know.

7. Read with just my lips moving or in a whisper voice.

  • Practice fish reading in class with a partner watching to make sure just my lips are moving
  • Practice fish reading at home
  • Video myself fish reading and watch video to see if my lips move and no sound comes out

8. Read for 15 minutes without getting tired.

Set a timer on your iPad and see how long you can read before getting tired and stopping.

9. Read at home for at least 30 minutes every night.

  • Check out a nonfiction books from the school or classroom library and pass an AR test on it
  • Check out a fiction books from the school or classroom library and pass an AR test on it
  • Check out a poetry book from the school or classroom library
  • Write your own poem
